A Love-Hate Relationship with Typhoons

I don’t wish anything bad on anyone. I hate to hear that a typhoon has blown through a city or town and devastated it. I hate hearing people have been left homeless or killed by a typhoon. But I have to admit, I do love it when a typhoon is approaching or has just cleared out of the area. They bring about many more things than just devastation.

Typhoons bring great waves to surf on several days before they hit land. Most of the time here in Japan, the waves are small. But when a typhoon is nearby, you can pretty much count on finding some good waves at the beach.

Another thing typhoons bring besides great waves to surf on is cleaner air. Just yesterday, a typhoon that broke up and turned into a tropical storm blew through the area. As it passed by, the wind from it cleared the pollution right out of the sky. The sky was the most brilliant blue, something I haven’t seen in a while here in the Kobe-Osaka-Kyoto area. Usually, the sky is a kind of grayish-brownish-blue color and hazy. The clouds were also amazing yesterday. They were blindingly white, and the contrast between the clouds and the sky was so vibrant. I could see downtown Osaka from Kyoto it was so clear. That is something that doesn’t often happen. If I had had my camera, I would have taken tons of photos just of the sky and the clouds. Unfortunately, I had to work so I didn’t catch the sunset. But I’m not bummed. Typhoon season has just begun. Expect more clear skies in the near future and lots more beautiful sunsets on the horizon.
