What is the Christmas spirit? Is it receiving presents or giving presents? How about Santa Claus and his eight tiny reindeer? Frosty the Snowman, Christmas trees, parties, eggnog, family gatherings, turkey and stuffing, ornaments, shopping, snuggling by the fireplace with someone you love, visions of sugar plums dancing in your head, or is it something else?

Sure, many will argue the fact that Jesus Christ wasn’t actually born on Christmas day, but it’s not really the point. The spirit of Christmas is about Jesus coming. It’s about his birth. It’s not about the day he was born on. Jesus is our gift from God, which is why people give gifts at Christmas. Giving gifts is a symbol of the love God has for us…everyone including Jews, Muslims, Atheists, Hindis and anyone else on this green earth.

Christmas is not a holiday for everyone, although Christians don’t mind others celebrating it because that’s what Christians do. They give and give freely, unlike most everyone else. They let others enjoy what God has given so freely, Jesus. That’s why Christians share about Jesus. And one great way to do just that is through the celebration of Jesus birth, Christmas, even though Christmas doesn’t actually fall on the day he was born. But like I said, that’s not the point. It’s about giving…and of course, receiving.

People who don’t like Christmas should learn to accept Christmas for what it is…a Christian holiday, plain and simple. If someone doesn’t want to celebrate Christmas the way Christians do, that’s ok. They don’t have to. Changing Christmas isn’t something Christians are willing to give up easily, even though, if every little thing about Christ were taken out of Christmas Day, Christians would still be able to celebrate the day because no one can ever take away the fact that Jesus Christ was born.

The best thing people can do is use this special time of the year to give. Bickering and arguing about how the holiday should or should not be spent is a waste of time and comes from selfishness. People need to stop being selfish. Give people. Give.
