I heard today on ABC News a story about Americans not getting paid for days they are out sick. ABC painted the picture as though it’s a huge problem for Americans, and that many Americans are not getting what they deserve, time away from work at home resting and recouperating from their fevers, sore throats and other ailments instead of at work where they could be passing the illnesses onto others.
I am an American and very loyal to my country even though I live and work in Japan. And one thing I’ve learned living abroad in Japan is that most people outside America, compared to how Americans work, aren’t pampered the way Americans are and they work long hard hours in sickness and in health. Some people get sick pay and others don’t. Some go to work sick, and others stay home. It’s all relative to their jobs, which they choose to do.
So it makes me sick to hear people whine over not being able to stay home when they have fevers demanding they be paid for the time off from work. Sure, it would be nice to get paid for days off of work, and many receive such benefits. But to demand that an employer pay for your time off from work when you are sick is only asking for trouble.
If an employer wants to pay people for the time they are out sick, then that’s fine. They should be able to choose to do that. If they don’t want to pay people when they are sick, that’s fine too.
If you want a job at a place that doesn’t pay for sick leave, and you want to get paid for sick leave, then you should ask for that before you get the job. If they say they won’t pay for sick leave, then either try to negotiate something different and come to an agreement, or go find a job somewhere else. If everyone would take this approach, eventually employers would either go out of business because no one would work for them, or they would change their policies to include benefits like sick pay into their work system.
Crying to the government to add more laws to force employers to pay employees sick pay is just one more way of restricting capital gains on companies, which in the longrun makes it difficult on the economy and causes further problems on employees income.
No profits, no businesses, no jobs! A good businessman looks to make his employees happily paid. Those who don’t, don’t last long in business.
