Friends are an important part of our lives. Some people have more than others and some friends are better than others. Friends help us, give us advice, listen to us and share in our lives. Friends listen better, give better advice and lend a helping hand in ways others usually don’t match. That is why they are called friends.
Friends, however, do not always have to have similar likes or dislikes in order to be our friends. Friends can be complete opposites. For some, the reason they may be friends is because they are opposites; the reason why we have the phrase, “Opposites Attract”. Their differences link them together.
Man’s best friend is supposedly the dog. Why? Because it listens better than most people do, is more loyal and takes the pain we inflict onto it better. Dogs, if raised well, can be gentle and loving. People, if raised well, can also be gentle and loving. But because we don’t speak dog, we don’t get offended by dogs’ barks. Sure we can be hurt by a dog’s bite. But bites heal. Words, however, hurt more deeply than bites, and some things we hear cause us so much pain we never really heal.
Proverbs 12:18 Reckless words pierce like a sword, but the tongue of the wise brings healing.
Proverbs 18:21 The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit.
The next time you are with your friend and your friend says or does something that irritates you, think twice about how you respond. We need to let others know we’ve been hurt or wronged, but in ways that aren’t reciprocating the pain. Or you could just bark at them! They may not understand what you said and think you’re crazy, but it may help you feel better and make them realize they hurt you. And if they are true friends, they will look past your crazy dog-like reaction.
